Astro-tourism in the Atacama Desert: experiences under the stars

Milky Way over the rock formations of the Atacama Desert, near San Pedro de Atacama.
When the sun sets over the Atacama Desert, one of Chile's most fascinating natural spectacles begins. The altitude, extremely dry climate, and low light pollution create exceptional conditions for observing stars, planets, and the Milky Way. From astronomical tours near San Pedro de Atacama to private astrophotography sessions, the desert offers nighttime experiences for curious travelers, couples, groups, and astronomy lovers.

Why is Atacama ideal for stargazing?

Northern Chile is internationally recognized for the quality of its skies. Its dry atmosphere, altitude, and distance from major urban centers allow for extraordinary visibility of the southern sky.

These conditions also explain the presence of important scientific centers, such as the ALMA Observatory, located on the Chajnantor plateau, and the Paranal Observatory, home to the Very Large Telescope.

It is important to distinguish these scientific centers from the tourist observatories near San Pedro de Atacama. It is always advisable to consult their official website.

Astronomical tours in San Pedro de Atacama

Most experiences take place outside the village, far from its lights. They generally include:

  • Introduction to astronomy and the southern sky.
  • Naked-eye constellation observation.
  • Use of telescopes to contemplate stars and planets.
  • Stories about the Andean worldview.
  • Hot drinks and blankets for cold nights.

Depending on the time of year and sky conditions, it is possible to observe the Southern Cross, Scorpio, Centaurus, and the Magellanic Clouds.

What is the best time for astrotourism in Atacama?

Astronomical observation can be carried out during much of the year, although it depends on the weather and the lunar cycle.

Nights close to the new moon offer darker skies and better conditions for viewing the Milky Way. During the full moon, on the other hand, the desert landscape takes on a special illumination, but the less bright stars are more difficult to observe.

Since tours can be canceled due to cloud cover, wind, or excessive moonlight, we recommend having more than one night in San Pedro de Atacama.
